How about that show for the hometown crowd! Philly fans could not have asked for a better home opener to the World Series, 5 home runs in 5 innings leading to a dominating 7 run shutout win. For the Astros, this experienced bunch will look to rub it off like any other loss and come back tonight even more hungry.
We are in for a battle of homegrown starting pitchers with the long-time Phillies staple Aaron Nola taking the bump. After a solid season and dominating first two starts in the postseason where he threw 6+ innings allowing 0 earned runs, Nola has struggled in his last two. Against both the Padres in the NLCS and in game 1 against the Astros, he gave up 5 runs or more and was not able to make it out of the 4th inning. While the Astros may be confident they have Nola's number, he will try to prove why he is the top starter in this Phillies rotation.
For the Astros, young ascending star Cristian Javier will make only his second start in a month, his last being a commanding performance against the Yankees in the ALCS. His only other appearance over that time was in their division series game 1 victory in relief. After a dominating third season in the majors, he looks to continue that trend in the World Series.
For these stout offenses, the Astros will attempt to wake up their bats after being shut out for the first time this postseason and the last time being, ironically, against the Nola led Phillies just short of a month ago. The Phillies will continue to feed off their raucous crowd where they are a perfect 6-0 this postseason and hope they didn't use up all their power and pitch tipping reading abilities in the previous game. Will the Astros bounce back to even this series and guarantee at least one more game in front of their hometown fans?
